The Entertainment and Technology program at The Myrtle Beach STEM Academy equips students with the creative, technical, and digital skills needed to excel in the dynamic fields of media, film, gaming, and digital production. The curriculum emphasizes innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving, preparing students for college-level studies and careers in entertainment, digital media, and emerging technology industries.

Freshman

Fall - Video Production I

This introductory course teaches the foundations of video production, including camera operation, shot composition, lighting, and audio recording. Students learn the stages of production—pre-production planning, filming, and basic editing. Projects may include news packages, interviews, short films, and promotional videos. Collaboration, creative problem-solving, and responsible equipment use are emphasized.

Spring - Film Studies / Cinematography

Film Studies introduces students to the history, art, and cultural impact of cinema. Students analyze films, genres, directors, and storytelling techniques.

Cinematography focuses on the technical and artistic aspects of capturing images on camera. Students learn lighting design, lens selection, framing, movement, and visual storytelling. They practice shooting scenes to understand how visual choices affect mood, pacing, and emotion.

Sophomore

Fall - Video Production II

An advanced production course focusing on more complex filming techniques, multi-camera setups, narrative structure, and advanced editing workflows. Students work in crews to produce sophisticated projects such as documentaries, short films, music videos, or broadcast segments. Emphasis is placed on directing, cinematography, sound mixing, color correction, and using professional-level software. A portfolio-quality final project is usually required.

Spring - Broadcast Journalism

A course that mirrors the environment of a working news studio. Students learn how to research stories, write scripts, conduct interviews, and present information on camera. Technical skills include operating studio cameras, teleprompters, switchers, and audio boards. Students produce news segments, announcements, and live or recorded broadcasts. Emphasis is on clear communication, journalistic ethics, teamwork, and deadlines.

Junior 

Fall - Film Studies / Cinematography

Spring - Music Production / Recording Technology/ Audio Engineering

This course teaches students how music is created, recorded, and produced using modern technology. Students work with digital audio workstations (DAWs) like GarageBand, Logic Pro, or FL Studio. Topics include MIDI sequencing, microphone techniques, mixing, effects processing, and songwriting basics. Projects include beat making, recording sessions, and producing finished tracks. No prior music background required.

Senior 

Fall - Sound Design for Film & Games and Theater Tech (lighting, sound boards, set design)

A specialized course in designing and creating sound effects, ambient soundscapes, and audio assets for visual media. Students learn Foley techniques, ADR (dialogue replacement), digital sound synthesis, layering, and syncing audio to picture. Projects include scoring scenes, creating game sound effects, and building full sound mixes for short films or gameplay clips. Creativity and storytelling through sound are key components.

This course introduces students to the technical side of live theater. Topics include lighting design, stage lighting operation, sound board operation, cue creation, stage management, rigging safety, and set construction. Students build sets, hang and focus lighting instruments, program cues, and support school productions. The class emphasizes teamwork, safety, and behind-the-scenes problem solving.

 

Spring - Editing & Post-Production (Adobe Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci)

A technical and creative course centered on the post-production phase of filmmaking. Students learn how to import footage, edit sequences, mix audio, add effects and transitions, and export final projects. Instruction includes color correction and grading (DaVinci Resolve), timeline management, visual effects basics, and workflow organization. Students complete multiple edited pieces and learn how professional editors shape story and pacing.
